July, 2006
While all the kids were away at camp, Kip and Michele went on a date!
They had dinner at one of Michele's favorite restaurants, Micky & Mooch, and then went to a
performance of the Charlotte Symphony at McGuire Nuclear Station where Kip works.
The concert was open to the public, but
many Duke Energy employees were in
attendance.  The concert is an annual
event held around July 4th.
Below is a shot of the crowd with McGuire Nuclear Station in the background.
This year, McGuire celebrates 25 years of operation.
The concert took place on the shores of Lake Norman, which the nuclear plant uses as a cooling
medium for it's steam.  This is why McGuire has none of the large cooling towers which people
normally associate with nuclear power plants.
A beautiful sunset over Lake Norman provided the perfect backdrop for this evening concert.
McGuire has two reactors, each
with its own turbine generator.

The electric generators at McGuire
operate year-round.  Each one
creates revenue at a rate of about
$12 per second.
